For people looking to understand the Pride a bit better in a fun way, this is also a good book, and for you happy people in the back that have it all figured out, then you can just sit back and read. If someone is questioning, this book (may not be a great help), but definitely gives a good perspective (minus the whole mom-is-tolerance-group-leader thing).

Warnings: -swearing (light) -depression -alcohol (light) The build up at the start is purposefully slow, but the dramatic tension quickly increases throughout the book. The moral of the story, ‘be true to yourself’, is also clear. It’s a romance it’s allowed to be cute and sweet. The story it’s self is predictable, but very cute. I mean, who has a plot arc for the mom character? Even side characters that only enter the story twice are fully planned out. This gives the novel a realistic feeling. Each room is described differently and very clearly with small, easy-visualized details.Įach character is very distinct with their own motives and issues to deal with in the story. Certain rooms also have certain smells (a good tactic for describing the love interest’s room). The school feels very much like a physical place, with the layout designed very clearly. The voice in this book, is a lot happier than I’m used to (Wintergirls, Blade… etc.), so it was a much needed change. Many chapters begin with a journal entry from Rafe to his teacher. It’s all going well, until he begins to develop feelings for one of his closest friends, will he be allowed to stay ‘Openly Straight’? Style: 1/3 That’s why he immediately moves to an all boys school far from home, where his every action is free from scrutiny. Rafe begins to wonder if he would be happier if he had never come out of the closet.

His mother immediately became the head of the tolerance group at his school and his every movement is judged. Plot:_ Rafe came out as gay only a few years ago, but, somehow, that changed everything.
